Englands Youtube qualifier?
England fans hoping to watch this weekend’s World Cup qualifier in Ukraine on Saturday are going to be unhappy that it is going to be shown exclusively live to subscribers on the internet who will pay around £5.00 for the privilege.
Kentaro, the agency appointed by the Ukrainian Football Federation originally sold the UK rights for the game to Setanta, but after the pay-TV firm collapsed, digital sport specialist Perform was appointed to stream the match online. The match will be shown on the website www.ukrainevengland.com and viewers will be able to subscribe to it using PayPal.
It’s believed that none of the traditional broadcasters were willing to pay the asking price to screen the game which kicks off at 5.15pm on Saturday. ITV has the rights to England home games and has taken over Setanta’s broadcast rights for away friendlies. However their deal does not cover away qualifying games, and neither the BBC, ITV, Sky nor Channel Five made a successful bid for the match.
Peter Silverstone, MD of Kentaro, said: “You will watch as you would any other streaming on the internet, like YouTube or the BBC iPlayer”, “There will be a pop-up player that will show the match in a very good quality stream.”
A “top commentary team” has been promised for the game, which is understood to include Notts County Director of Football Sven-Goran Eriksson (but probably not Sol Campbell!)
Odeon cinemas will show the game live at 11 venues around the country, including the flagship cinema at Leicester Square, but the match will not be available in pubs, so another traditional venue for England’s supporters is out of the window.
Football Association spokesman Adrian Bevington said his organisation “would obviously like to see the game broadcast to as many people as possible” but insisted the matter was out of the FA’s hands.
England have already qualified for the 2010 World cup in South Africa by winnning all 8 of their games

Watch Live World Cup Broadcast
If you are are sitting in your living room, drinking beer, hanging out with friends and betting on who is going to win while you watch the live World Cup Broadcast, you’re certainly not alone. As a matter of fact, the estimates are that as many as 1.5 billion people may tune in to watch the broadcast. Just so you can understand what kind of mind boggling numbers that is, that’s fully 20% of the world’s population.
If every man, woman and child in the United States were to watch the games, they still wouldn’t come to even a fifth of that total. If every man woman and child in India were to watch the games, they wouldn’t be enough to match that number. In fact, if every single Christian in the world or every single Muslim in the world were to tune in, they would still need to be joined by some of their fellow citizens of the Earth in order to make up such an amazing number.
Few events in the world can match the kind of excitement that the world cup offers. Even the moon landing, when Neil Armstrong offered his famous “one small step for man” speech was watched by just 1/3 that number of people (of course that somewhat makes sense given that there were much fewer television sets at the time, but you get the idea).
In the meantime though, if you’re looking to see some of the exciting tournaments leading up to the big game, you can always watch live world Cup Broadcasts on the Internet at FIFA.TV. This video service offers viewers in several dozen countries the ability to watch the games live through a streaming feed on their computers.
Adding to this years’ insane amount of interest and the number of people who want to watch the live world cup broadcast is the fact that the games will be hosted in Johannesburg, in the former apartheid capital where freedom now reigns. For the event, a brand new stadium, upgrades to the airport, a new light rail link and a general brushing up of the city are all being prepared.
So who will actually be taking the field when the broadcast starts? That’s anyone’s guess. We only know for sure that South Africa, as the host nation at least has a guaranteed spot in the games and you can be certain that we will watch the live world cup broadcast.
